My House is Made of Flesh
‘My House is Made of Flesh’ presents a series of complete works that at the same time remain undefined. The aim is not only to show the finished sculpture but its construction and intrinsic potential through intermediate stages. (…)The material used by Cotterli is unpredictable and consequently, unique is the result. The tangible becoming of her pieces makes us rediscover the authentic value of the artwork, even in the age of its mechanical reproduction and seriality, to quote Walter Benjamin. Pieces like ‘I built my own cage’ and ‘Run, Baby, Run’ speak loud and clear: the body as a shelter and armour, but at the same time a cage and a trap that we have unwittingly built to our detriment. Both pieces reveal a claustrophobic feeling that stems from the impossibility of changing the state of things, in other words, of escaping from the corporeal dimension. However, the static nature of the former contrasts with the dynamic significance of the latter, underlining once again the artist’s contradictory relationship with the skin.
